Which Linux? Dosas? Pizzas?

as always, i was dabbling with useless things the other day, and i ended up digging linux a bit.

it was all confusing initially... there were so many varieties/flavors/variants of it. not at all connected to software/hardware/networking fields of any kind, i was like a complete stranger to linux. had to read a bit to get comfortable. and here is what i broke it down, so that a boy-in-the-street can easily understand what linux is all about.

so... what is linux?

it is...., something like, a dosa....like a pizza!👀😜
wuoh!!😳 what???😲

this is how i wanna understand linux. :-) there are sooooooooooooo many varieties of them to satisfy almost everyone who wants to taste or eat 'em.

take a look at this pic....

the base can be same, but the toppings are many, and you can choose to mix or miss m/any of them on any serving. depending upon the combinations u make varieties/flavors.

so is it with linux.

like the pizza, linux has a base and a topping. 😁
base of linux is called, DISTRO (distributions)- ubuntu, debian, fedora, openSUSE.
topping of linux is called, DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT- gnome, kde, mate, xfce, cinnamon.

Qimo-OS is a linux-variant that i came across and liked a lot for its looks:)😍

so, what are the base and topping of Qimo💞?😏
BASE- ubuntu DISTRO (xubuntu precisely, xfce+ubuntu)💓
TOPPING - gnome+xfce DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT.💗

there are many varieties of bases as well as toppings, and you can mix them all as you like. hence.....linux comes in soooooooooooooooo many flavors.

ubuntu sub-family is too large, and i liked one of them-QimoOS.

QimoOs was designed a looonnnng ago but the development team had stopped functioning. everything, good/bad, comes with an expiry date.sad. it was soooooo beautiful, elegant, visual appeal is extremely good. it was designed for kids. yes. it is an OS for kids.

take a look at these screenshots.😊 too beautiful.

look at stats.
bad, it is a 32-bit OS, so does not support more than 3.2GB of ram, despite the 8GB ram available.
kernel clearly states, Qimo is from ubuntu family of OSs.

system monitor interface is sooooo beautiful, colorful and vivid😘. at the bottom lies quick-accesses  to favorite apps, on the bottom-panel which can be configured/removed as one likes.😚

playing mp3/mp4/any media file was unsuccessful. it asked for extra plug-ins to install. i tried, but could not succeed eventually.😥

an attempt to update made it clear that this OS is no-longer supported.😔

Qimo has an in-built interface to download apps from ubuntu software center.😣

i tried to get VLC from that software-center but....mhmhm... failed.😏

this part told me that GUI of Qimo is a combo of both GNOME+XFCE desktop environments.😇

attempts to install chrome were not successful either. i was left with only one native browser-firefox.😷

i ran this OS on live-USB, did not install it on HDD. i could not find a way to get a direct access to internal HDD though i could save the screenshots on them through the prompt-window. saving screenshots mounted those drives of HDD but i could not access any of them straight at all.😫

multiple attempts of media plug-ins' installations proved futile.🙀

should i attribute those failures of installation attempts to dead-slow internet connectivity?😐

i was trying to store screenshots on all the partitions of internal HDD, and whenever i stored them on different partition, it mounted itself automatically.

sooo... here was that beautiful OS that i spent a day digging with. :) as they always say about linux, it is a learning experience; one gets to know about computers a little more as we spend more and more time working on linux.

this last pic, is a wallpaper from Qimo site. not from my computer.😊cheers guys:) happy linuxing.
